What small business website design actually involves
Small business website design is the work of building a site for an owner-run company, usually five to fifteen pages, where the goal is enquiries rather than brand awareness. It covers the design, the build, the copy structure, the technical SEO foundations and the hosting the site runs on.
The difference between a small business site and a corporate one is not quality, it is scope and accountability. There is no marketing department to absorb a bad decision. If the site does not bring in work, the owner feels it that month. That is why we start with what you sell and who buys it rather than with a moodboard.
What every build includes
Built to be found
Titles, headings, structured data and a sitemap done properly at build time, not bolted on later as an "SEO package".
Built for phones first
Around half of UK web traffic is mobile and UK desktop use is still high, so both get designed and tested rather than one being an afterthought.
Built to load fast
Next.js, image optimisation and UK hosting. Speed is the one technical factor a visitor notices immediately.
Built to be changed
A content management system you can actually use, so a price change does not need a developer or an invoice.
Your four options for getting a small business website
Most business owners in the UK end up choosing between these. Here is what each actually costs and where each one falls down.
DIY website builders
Around £100 to £300 a yearWorks when: Wix, Squarespace and Shopify are genuinely good now. If you need a few pages and have time to build it yourself, a free website trial will tell you quickly whether it works for you.
Falls down when: Your time is the hidden cost, template designs repeat across your competitors, and technical SEO control is limited. Fine for a new business testing an idea; restrictive once search traffic matters.
A freelance web designer
Around £500 to £3,000 one-offWorks when: Direct contact with the person doing the work and usually the cheapest route to a custom design. Good freelancers do excellent small business web design.
Falls down when: Quality varies enormously and ongoing support depends on one person staying available. If they stop trading you inherit a site nobody knows.
A web design agency
Around £3,000 to £6,000 one-offWorks when: Web design companies bring a team: designer, developer, copywriter. Suited to a bigger build with several stakeholders and a defined brand.
Falls down when: The upfront cost puts most small businesses off, and small accounts can end up with the most junior person on the team.
Pay monthly web design
From £75 a monthWorks when: A professional website with no upfront fee, hosting, ongoing support and updates in one predictable bill. The site is yours after 12 payments.
Falls down when: There is a 12-month minimum term, and over five years a one-off build plus cheap hosting can total less. It is a cash flow decision.
We specialise in the fourth option, but the first three are real choices and we would rather you picked the right one than the one we sell.
What our small business web design services cover
Every project is a custom design built around what your business sells, not a theme with your logo dropped into it. Responsive web design is standard, so the layout adapts from a phone through to a desktop monitor rather than shrinking awkwardly.
We build on Next.js rather than WordPress by default, because it is faster and there is less to break. If you already run a WordPress website and want to keep it, we will work with that instead of insisting you start again.
Ongoing support is available as a separate monthly plan or included in a pay monthly build. Either way you get a named person who knows your site, which is the part most small business owners tell us they actually missed with their last web designer.
Two ways to pay. Take whichever suits.
The website is the same either way. The only difference is when you pay for it.
Cash flow matters
Pay monthly
From £75 a month, nothing upfront, hosting and support included. 12-month minimum and the site is yours after 12 payments.
How pay monthly worksBudget already set aside
One-off build
Pay for the build once and own it immediately. Hosting and maintenance are then optional add-ons rather than bundled. Usually the cheaper route over five years.

Do you actually need a custom website?
Not every small business does, and it is worth saying so before you spend anything.
A website builder is probably enough if…
You need three or four pages, you are not competing for search traffic, and your work comes from word of mouth or a marketplace. Wix or Squarespace will do that for less than we would charge, and we would rather tell you than take the money.
A custom build earns its money if…
You want to rank in search for what you sell, you have several services that each need their own page, you are competing against other local firms with real websites, or your current site is slow and you are losing people before they read anything.
