What to do when your web developer goes MIA

What to do when your web developer goes MIA

It is the most common nightmare in small business web design. Your website breaks, you email your developer, and you hear nothing back. Days turn into weeks. You are losing customers, and you are locked out of your own site.

Freelance developers disappear for many reasons. Sometimes they take full-time jobs. Sometimes they simply get overwhelmed. Whatever the reason, you need your website back right now.

Step 1: Check Who Owns Your Domain

The biggest disaster happens when your developer bought your domain name (like yourbusiness.co.uk) under their own name. You must go to Nominet or ICANN and do a WHOIS search. If your name is not listed as the registrant, you do not legally own your web address.

You must always buy your domain yourself. If your developer registered it, email them and demand an immediate domain transfer tag change to your own registrar account.

Step 2: Secure Your Hosting Account

If you cannot reach your developer, you must bypass them. If you pay the hosting bill directly, contact the hosting company immediately. Explain the situation and prove your identity. They will reset your passwords and lock the old developer out.

If your developer was reselling hosting to you, things get harder. You will need to take full backups of your site (if you have WordPress admin access) and migrate the site to a new host immediately.

Stop Relying on One Person

Freelancers are risky. If they get sick or go on holiday, your business suffers. We built WebElev8 to solve this exact problem. We are a team, not a single contractor working from a bedroom.

If your developer has disappeared, call us immediately. We regularly rescue hijacked websites and move them to secure, stable hosting where you hold all the keys.
